CLEVELAND, WI –
Lakeshore Technical College will receive nearly $150,000 from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to support critical workforce needs in the nuclear power sector and provide financial assistance to full-time enrollees in the college's Nuclear Technology program.
LTC has received similar grants the past two academic years, providing scholarships of up to $2,200 per semester to students who are enrolled in the Nuclear Technology program and taking at least 12 credits. In the 2009-10 academic year, the funding allowed for scholarships to be offered to 26 students.
"The success of the program was witnessed on Saturday when the first nine students graduated from LTC's Nuclear Technology program," said Rich Hoerth, dean of Public Safety. "Several of these students have already been offered positions at the local nuclear power plants."
The recent $149,472 grant is part of $15 million awarded to 59 institutions in 29 states and Puerto Rico. The funds were provided to NRC by the U.S. Congress to support scholarships and fellowships, faculty development, trade schools, community colleges and research efforts.
