LTC Web and Marketing Students Partner with St. Mary's School

CLEVELAND, WI —
St. Mary's School in Sheboygan Falls, a provider of Catholic education since 1950, has turned to LTC web and marketing students in the new integrated web marketing class to help put together a marketing campaign targeted at increasing enrollment at the grade school by March 1, 2013. Increasing enrollment would mean that the grade school would be able to remain open.
The 44 students in the class were divided into teams and spent numerous hours outside of the 80 in-class hours to complete the final project. Each team created every part of the marketing plan from a new website to flyers. “Working with every aspect of the project was interesting,” said student Jennifer Skattebo. “The real world experience will help in future employment plus we came out with a great product.”
The new class, taught by Paul Hoffman, Laura Krumholz and Mike Reisenauer, combines coursework from graphic and web design, web and software development and marketing and involves collaboration from the three different teachers.
“Integrating these three areas is reflective of the current business trends,” said Reisenauer, a Marketing Instructor at LTC. “It is very different for a technical college to put three teachers in a room for five hours a week to teach a course. LTC is ahead of the curve for learning and teaching.”
All three instructors felt that giving the students a real-life scenario rather than a fictional scenario would challenge the students and give them experience of what they could be doing at a future job in this field.
Working in teams, students competed against each other to design, build and produce a wide array of marketing materials, including web sites, billboards, letters, brochures and many other marketing items. Each team needed to create a business marketing plan, assign members to carry out tasks while meeting deadlines.
“I learned that teamwork creates a better product because of the input of many people with different perspectives”, said student Carole Martinco. “It was valuable for me to be involved in all aspects of the project as I work for a small company and that is the nature of that type of employment.”
