LTC to close Fridays June 20 through July 25

Lakeshore Technical College’s campuses in Cleveland, Manitowoc and Sheboygan will be closed Fridays from June 20 through July 25 in an effort to conserve energy.

The college projects an energy cost savings of $6,000 for six days over the six weeks, as vehicles, computers, copiers and other equipment used daily by employees and students will be idled, and offices will be dark. LTC will have realized energy savings of over $36,000 since the program inception in 2008.

LTC staff will work their full work weeks in fewer days, Monday through Thursday, or use vacation time or non-paid leave to cover the closed days. Over the past four years, various staff has taken volunteer non-paid leave on the Fridays when campus is closed to produce a savings of nearly $125,000.

During this time period, the Cleveland campus will be open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., LTC Sheboygan and LTC Manitowoc will be open Monday through Wednesday from 7:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. All campuses will be closed July 4 for the holiday.

The adjusted summer operation hours are just part of LTC’s commitment to students, communities and staff in taking a leadership role in energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainability. Four wind turbines on the Cleveland campus save over $22,000 annually in electricity while two photovoltaic systems collect and convert sunlight into electricity to save nearly $1,000 yearly.  Together, LTC’s wind and solar installations produce 197,500 kilowatt hours or enough energy to power more than 17 average American homes for a year.  The college also employs an energy policy that includes initiatives such as carpooling, recycling, and a community outreach mobile demonstration and training unit called “Green to Go”. Additionally, LTC is the only technical college with a designated State Natural Area in Wisconsin, the Old Growth Forest, a 10,000 year old woodland which achieved this status in 2011.
