Today’s Youth Are Our Future Workforce
To maintain our driving force in dairy farming into the future, our Lakeshore community needs an educated, well-trained workforce. Lakeshore College’s ag instructors feel strongly that exposing youth to events and organizations such as Ag Discovery Day, 4-H, and FFA (National FFA Organization) can inspire them to choose a career in ag, or at minimum help them understand the tremendous value of the industry to our local area.
“I am always thrilled to see young students participating in agricultural activities and courses. Having not grown up on a farm myself, it is inspiring to witness the spark of interest in their eyes and to know that the lessons they learn will be invaluable for their future, regardless of whether they pursue a career in agriculture,” says Megan Kulow, Lakeshore College Agribusiness Science and Dairy Management Instructor.
Megan says even though 95% of farms in Wisconsin are considered family farms, we can no longer take for granted that youth growing up on farms will follow in their family’s footsteps. Even if they do, successful farming in today’s competitive market requires knowledge beyond what was needed by previous generations. With the wide variety of agriculture careers in Wisconsin today, events such as Ag Discovery Day can also inspire youth to learn more about career opportunities they may have never considered before. Anyone who possesses the following traits can find an on-farm or off-farm career in ag very satisfying:
- Appreciate the outdoors
- Interested in animals and plants
- Enjoy hands-on activities
- Passionate about agriculture
- Dependable
- Organized
