CLEVELAND, WI —
Washington Monthly, a bimonthly nonprofit magazine of U.S. politics and government based in Washington, D.C., ranked Lakeshore Technical College second in its 2019 national ranking of the best two-year colleges for adult learners.
LTC had the highest ranking of any two-year college in Wisconsin. It was ranked number three in 2018, also the highest ranking two-year college in the state.
Washington Monthly is the only publication ranking colleges for adult learners, who comprise nearly a third of all college students nationwide, and the majority of students at LTC. These rankings began in 2016, when LTC placed in the top 10.
“We are excited to be recognized as a national model of excellence among the nearly 1,100 community colleges in the nation. This ranking is a direct result of the hard work our faculty and staff are doing on a daily basis, both inside and outside the classroom, to support student success,” said LTC President Paul Carlsen. “With the support of the entire Lakeshore community, we continue working hard to make it easier for LTC students to enroll and transfer to four-year institutions. We have added more online and accelerated courses to help students balance their work lives with college. We have invested in support services including our childcare center, career placement, academic support, and peer tutoring.”
Washington Monthly does not find traditional college rankings helpful for adult students, who instead want to know how a college will make it easy for them to enroll, succeed, and finish their degrees. Calling out LTC specifically, Washington Monthly’s article states: “The second-ranked two-year college, Wisconsin’s Lakeshore Technical College, offers blended, online, and a range of other distance learning formats, as well as ways to accelerate course completion.”
“Lakeshore Technical College should be rightly proud of its #2 place in the Monthly's Best 2-year College for Adult Learners ranking,” says Paul Glastris, editor-in-chief of the Washington Monthly. “What this shows is that Lakeshore Technical College is serving both its students and the country at large.”
Washington Monthly rankings are based on ease of transfer/enrollment, flexibility of programs, services available for adult students, percent of adult students (age 25+) at the college, mean earnings of adult students 10 years after entering college, loan repayment rates of adult students five years after entering repayment, and tuition and fees for in-district students.
