GED, ELL, and College Prep Program

The GED, ELL, and College Prep program serves students, no matter where they are on their educational journey. At Lakeshore, we offer a wide range of learning options, especially for adults. We help you start at the level that’s best for you, no matter how long you have been in school before, or how long you have been out of school.

GED, ELL, and College Prep services are designed to prepare you for a higher paying job or for college.

English Language Learning (ELL) classes

ELL classes are available for students whose primary language is not English. All instruction and materials are free. Students can learn reading, writing, listening, and speaking English at different levels of difficulty based on their need. Morning and evening classes are offered. Students can choose to attend class two, three, or more days a week. ELL students also meet with advisors to discuss career planning and transitioning to college or employment.

Students who are working on their high school credential or taking college-level classes are welcome to enroll in ELL classes at the same time for language support.

ELL classes are primarily held at Lakeshore Manitowoc and Lakeshore Sheboygan. ELL open lab classes are provided at our Cleveland campus to support students enrolled in college-level courses. User-friendly online classes are also available.

Adult Secondary Education (ASE)

The Adult Secondary Education (ASE) program is for students who are wanting to earn their high school diploma. No matter what the reason, no matter how long it has been since that last high school class was taken, Lakeshore works with adult students to help them earn their high school credential. Options include:

GED

(General Equivalency Development certificate)

HSED

(High School Equivalency Diploma)

HSED 5.09

(High School Equivalency Diploma alternative)

Lakeshore helps students prepare for the five GED exams. Exams are in the areas of:

  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • English Language Arts
  • Civics

Similar to the GED, the HSED is an exam-based path to the high school credential.

Students prepare and take the four GED exams. In addition, students take Employability Skills and Health to complete the diploma.

Lakeshore provides a course-based option to earn a high school credential. In the HSED 5.09 program, students take coursework in:

  • Communication Skills
  • Computer Basics
  • Pre-College Math
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Civics
  • Health
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Employability Skills

Previous high school credit is taken into consideration. Math and Communications courses align to Lakeshore’s pathway into college, allowing graduates to easily transition to college.

Interested in attending college but don’t have your high school diploma? Lakeshore’s GED/HSED+College program allows students to enroll in the GED/HSED/HSED 5.09 program while taking college courses. Students are provided academic support, intensive advising, and can earn both their high school and college credential at the same time.
