CLEVELAND, WI —

Seven Lakeshore Technical College students earned a combination of gold, silver, and bronze awards at the annual Skills USA state-level competition, which was held virtually this year. The three who earned gold and one who earned bronze will compete during the national competition taking place virtually throughout the month of June.

Earning gold awards were: Justin Swigert, Sheboygan, Auto Service Technology; Cade Livermore, Sheboygan, CNC Milling Specialist; and Alex Lemberger, Whitelaw, Auto Refinishing Technology. All will compete nationally.

Earning silver awards were: Johnathan Shields, Manitowoc, Auto Refinishing Technology; and Ryan Wendt, Manitowoc, CNC Turning Specialist.

Earning bronze were: Matt Haefke, Sheboygan, Youth Apprentice, Precision Machining Technology; and Alex Hesselink, Sheboygan, Auto Service Technology. Haefke will compete nationally.

“This year has been a challenge for anyone learning high-tech, hands-on skills, though these students persevered and came out on top,” said Sheila Schetter, LTC’s Skills USA advisor and dean of advanced manufacturing, agriculture, automotive, and engineering. “I am proud of all our Skills USA participants who put themselves out there to compete virtually, which in some cases is more difficult than competing in person.”

Skills USA challenges students in trade, industrial, technical, and health occupation programs to apply their classroom learning in a competitive environment. Students focus on using their technical skills along with communication and troubleshooting skills as they compete against students from other technical colleges around the state and nationwide.
