LTC Student Places Fourth in Nation with CNC Skills

CLEVELAND, WI —

Lakeshore Technical College student Matt Berry placed fourth in the CNC Milling Specialist category at the 55th national SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference held June 24-28 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“We are so proud of Matt’s accomplishment at the national competition, and are excited for him and his future in high-tech manufacturing,” said Sheila Schetter, dean of advanced manufacturing, agriculture, automotive, and engineering at LTC. “We saw during his courses that his CNC skills were superb, and were not surprised when he proved his skills were among the best in the state when he received a gold medal at the SkillsUSA state competition this spring.”

SkillsUSA is an event which challenges students in trade, industrial, technical, and health occupation programs to apply their classroom learning in a competitive environment. Students focus on using their technical skills along with communication and troubleshooting skills as they compete against students from other technical colleges around the state.

Competitors in Berry’s category were evaluated on their preparation for employment in computer numeric control milling, commonly referred to as CNC milling. They wrote CNC milling programs, interpreted prints, and measured parts. They also demonstrated theoretical knowledge of CNC machine configuration, setup, and operations, as well as professionalism.

Berry, who has been a part-time CNC technician program student since 2015, expects to graduate in May 2020. He is employed at Polyfab Corp. in Sheboygan in a machinist/mold maintenance position.
